Argus, 1.71m, dark bay, was born in 1982. He is by the well known Pion-Abgar xx/keur out of Rozetta/pref- prest who is by the famous Jasper/keur-Courville xx/pref. Argus performed very well at his KWPN performance test and claimed the 3rd place out of 24. His scores were: step-7, trot-7, canter-8, riding-7.9, jumping under saddle-9, free jumping-9, pulling-8, character-9, stable behavior-9 and training report-9. As a KWPN approved stallion Argus was exported to the USA immediately after his performance test, where he stayed until the end of his sport carreer in 1993. Since then Argus is back in the Netherlands and stands at his current owner's dressage farm and stud STV (Stoeterij 't Vierspan) at Handel.

Argus belongs to the very few horses in the world that simultanuously competed at both F.E.I. Dressage (Laurie Flavo and Oliver Luze) as well as at Grand Prix Show Jumping (Hap Hansen).

Argus' descendant report summerizes 'A uniform collection of well developed foals with robust limbs. The movement shows much power from the hind legs. At 1989 American Keurings Argus produced 4 out of Top Ten foals in North America including 1st and 3rd. Among lots of other improvements Argus, having 62.5% gelderlander blood in his vains, passes on his wonderfull character to his offspring.

Pion not only sired the KWPN approved stallion Argus, but also the KWPN approved grey stallions Aktion/keur and Democraat. Aktion performed at Grand Prix level Dressage and Democraat perfomed high at both Dressage as well as Show Jumping. The KWPN has placed both stallions in their Top Ten index for dressage stallion.

Argus is the only horse in the world that was simultaneously successful in both Grand Prix jumping and international dressage competitions.

As of 2003, Argus has produced the second highest number of 1st premium offspring in North America of all approved stallions. In those, he has produced 22 star, 2 keur, and a number of approved sons.

In 1988, Argus sired more 'Premium 1' foals than any other breeding stallion in the US. In two breeding seasons, the stallion has sired more premium 1 foals than all other stallions during their entire breeding careers in the United States.

In 1989, four out of the ten highest placed foals at the selection were sired by Argus. Argus has a jumping index of 129 and a dressage index of 131.

Argus' sports results include 1st place PCHSA Futures Finals for Jumping, and in 1989 finished in the top 5 in his first Grand Prix. He continued to prove himself as a jumper when he won the Grand Prix at Showpark of Delmar and the Sundance Grand Prix at the Arizona Winner Circuit in 1991. As a dressage horse, Argus held many titles including 1989 CDA Reserve Champion Fourth Level Horse of the Year and in 1990 and 1991 was one of the only horses to be competing successfully in both Grand Prix Jumping and FEI Dressage.

Argus' sire is Pion by the famous thoroughbred Abgar, who sired many famous jumping horses. At Argus' offspring evaluation in Holland, he received a first premium for offspring that had "Excellent and consistent in type, legs, body and movement." Argus' dam Rozetta has been awarded two degrees, Pref., and Prestatie.

According to the 2003 NA/WPN published statistics, Argus has sired 76 premium offpsing, 22 star offpsring, and 2 awarded Keur status. He also has sired a number of approved sons. Even though he hasn't been active in North America for 10 years, he still holds the second highest number of 1st premium and Star offspring of all the NA/WPN stallions. Of all of his offspring, 33% of them received 1st Premium status.Argus is approved for breeding with the ISR/Oldenburg and Canadian Warmblood registries.

Argus liep in USA int.

Imported from France the grey Thoroughbred stallion was not initially very popular in Holland. He had been imported to Holland by Mr Burgers, a Thoroughbred and Shetland Pony breeder.

His bloodlines are the classic jumping recipe: Owen Tudor (Bay Ronald), Son-In-Law (Bay Ronald again) and on his dam's side to Le Sancy xx who is also influential in the Ramzes family.

Abgar arrived as a 5 year old racehorse, and had one winning start before being sent to stud. In his first four years at stud, Abgar hardly covered any Warmblood mares. He moved to Brabant where he was slightly more popular, covering about 40 mares a season.

In 1976, he moved to the more high profile, Roelofs Stables in Den Ham. There covering only Warmblood mares, he became one half of the dynamic breeding duo of Abgar x Joost, or Joost x Abgar, the cross that made the name Roelofs famous. Not that the offspring were classically beautiful, they inherited their sire's 'crooked' hindlegs and ewe neck - but it was their character that made them so sought after. He soon had national level showjumpers - Itturidu, Sapristie - and international representatives, Jabgar, Humphrey, Olympic Treffer and Valeur D.

Abgar died in 1984 at the age of 26, survived by stallion sons, Treffer, Pele, Pion, Transvaal, Bantry Khan and Abantos.

Courville (1952) by Fair Trial out of Plouvien, by Chateau Bouscaut. Like Furioso and Cottage Son, Courville descended from Son-in-Law and Marco, although they were, respectively, in the third and fifth remove of his pedigree. His son Little One (1968) was a successful show jumper, and won the prestigious Hamburg show jumping Derby in 1977. Once retired from competitions, he was re-named Jasper and became one of the world's leading show jumping sires. Other sons of Courville who have done particularly well at stud are Notaris (1972) and Renville (1975). The success of these three is particularly impressive, given that only five of Courville's sons received a stallion licence.

Burggraaf is a product of the successful Holsteiner formula Landgraf I x Cor de la Bruyère. Topbreeder Landgraf I produced over 50 approved stallions and over 70 state premium mares just in Germany and heads the German yearbook with the total winnings of his progeny of over 6 million D Marks. That sum was earned by amongst others: Libero H., Lanciano, Landlord, Lacors, Lucky Luke, Lasall, Landrätin, Londen, Landwind and Taggi.

The dam's sire is the famous sport horse producer Cor de la Bryère, which holds second place in the German yearbook with total winnings of around 2 million D-Marks. From "Corde" descend also over 50 approved stallions and state premium mares. To mention a few names of his famous offspring in international showjumping: Calando, Caletto, Chanel, Contrast and Corlandus. Burggraaf's dam Loanda is out of a unique Holsteiner breeding line (stamm: 7126) who produced Accord I, Accord II, Acobat I to IV, Arico, Fra Diavolo, Chicago, Freeman, Cordon Bleu and Burggraaf.

Burggraaf was very successful in the heavier classes of the National Stallion Competition, of which he won the finals and six of the seven rounds.

Later he was an international showjumper with Roelof Bril; they cleared the 2.10 m. during the puissance of Indoor Brabant in 1991 and in 1993 they were reserve champion of the 1.40 class for KWPN stallions. Burggraaf heads by far the Dutch showjumping index.

Breeder: Graf von Kielmansegg

One of the most influential jumping sires. He has sons in most breeding regions throughout the world. Landgraf has sired the most money winning showjumping offspring in the World by far.

When you visit Elmshorn, Germany, these days, and you stop at the century-old "Riding and Driving School", then you are where the heart of the Holsteiner Horse Breeding is beating. And there you meet that characteristic shape of Landgraf I in front of the complex, the symbol of the modern Holsteiner Sport Horse and performance sire. The original himself died in 1996 at the age of 30.

Thanks to A.I., 85 foals by Landgraf I are expected this year. For many years, Landgraf has lead the list of sires of sporthorses. His offspring have won more than seven million dollars by now, mainly in showjumping, and in this respect he is the top sire in the world today. The runner-up is more than two million dollars behind, and Landgraf's children are still as successful as ever, and the prize money they win is still growing fast. It will take a long time to surpass Landgraf's record. Born in 1966, Landgraf I belongs to the first vintage of his sire, Ladykiller XX, who produced another hero one year later in Lord, another of the most influential stallions in Holstein. Ladykiller XX was a very popular thoroughbred stallion, born in England, and a descendant of the very famous stallion line of Phalaris - Fairway - Blue Peter - Sailing Light, combining with Hyperion. His dam also carried Phalaris-blood, as well as Son-in-Law.

In spite of his famous ancestors - Ladykiller was a failure as a racehorse. His performance genes were still there, of course, but they substantiated not as speed but mainly as jumping talent with the occasional good dressage horse as well. All of Ladykiller's offspring could easily be recognized as such, and Landgraf was no exception. These horses have beautiful noble faces with large bright eyes, bay - brown coats - and they could jump!

Landgraf has a very good temperament, which he passes on dominantly, together with excellent movement. His dam, Warthburg, came from the stem No. 275 and accumulates the performance genes of Ethelbert, Aehill and Cicero, who are responsible for laying the foundation of the Holsteiner Sporthorse as the world's leading jumping stud book.

Landgraf was chosen to represent the Holsteiner breed at the 1972 German National Agricultural Show - and finished last. And that says it all about the value of lead classes at Ag Shows, in respect of performance. At various events, like the Equitana, the world's largest equestrian fair, Landgraf jumped fences higher than two meters with ease.

And jumping is the field where he excels most as a sire. The list of his showjumping offspring is endless. A few names for example: Freestyle (formerly Lalique) won Aachen Grand Prix, Libero won the Dutch National title five times (!) and also the 1994 Volvo World Cup. The licensed stallion, Lacros, is another along with top performers: Lucky Luke, Lanciano, Landlord, Lausbub and Taggi.

Nearly sixty colts by Landgraf I have been licensed for the Holsteiner studbook, like the champion of 1991, Linaro, and the dressage talent, Loutano. Some of his sons have already achieved top positions as performance sires, for example, Letus II, a jumping sire, and the versatile Landadel, who produced three champion stallions for the Oldenburger breed alone, and also the outstanding international showjumper, Le Cou Cou, a licensed stallion.

So far, 340 broodmares by Landgraf I are registered in the Holsteiner stud book, 260 of these are in the Head Stud Book, 70 have been awarded the State Premium, and a considerable number have been champion mares at shows. Landgraf I is a legend already during his life time. His genes are securely recorder in the breed of the modern sporthorse. His descendants, together with his monument in Elmshorn, will remind future generations of the horse lovers of this truly great personality.

Died May 10, 1996.

Breeder: Mrs. A.L. Adda, England

Breeding history: Haselau from 1965 to 1971, Groß Buchwald 1972 to 1974, Siethwende 1975, Haselau 1976 to 1979, died in 1979.

Ladykiller xx embodies the powerful type of the thoroughbred. He was a strikingly handsome stallion with pronounced masculine attributes. He had an excellent mastery of the three basic gaits and was imbued with the very best character and temperament values. Of the enormous number of thoroughbreds that were applied in breeding in the 1960ies and the early 1970ies, he turned out to be the best by far. The sires who came before him such as Anblick xx and Cottage Son xx and partly also those who performed stud duty as contemporaries of Ladykiller xx like the stallions Manometer xx and Marlon xx, also founded their own stallion lines. None however was as convincing on such a broad basis as Ladykiller xx. He clearly transmitted himself, his marked type, the magnificent head, correct and powerful foundation and excellent jumping ability in regard to capacity, manner of jumping, leg technique and above all spirit. A number of his progeny were conspicuous because of their light tan colour with “green” legs, as well as the occasionally open kidney region. His chestnuts were consistently even more noble than his bay progeny. Particular successes were achieved by mating with mares who were also of noble blood. Thus his best stallion sons by far, Landgraf I and Lord were both bred out of mares who themselves had significant proportions of the best thoroughbred blood. Landgraf I became the most important sire of showjumpers of the twentieth century. The Holstein Breeder’s Association erected a life-sized bronze monument in his honour on the precincts of the association centre in Elmshorn, the unveiling of which Landgraf I attended personally. Lord was approvals champion and likewise sent a whole armada of progeny to victory on the great showjumping courses around the globe. The fact that he was a three-quarter bred may be the reason why his hereditary transmission was not always of a completely harmonious type. Even though Ladykiller did not really sire dressage horses, he produced a son Lido whose forte in hereditary transmission was exactly in the field of dressage. It would be hard to find another Holsteiner who procreated dressage horses for the very highest demands as this stallion. In the Netherlands, the Ladykiller xx son Heidelberg, who was named after his damsire became the pacemaker of the breed. The sires Lorenz, Lagos, Ladalco and Lamour all also went to Holland following their successful above average covering periods in Holstein. Today it is almost a necessity of fashion in Holstein, that a horse carries Ladykiller xx blood at least two or three times, whereby it occurs from time to time, that horses in the first generations are inbred five or six times to this invaluable foundation sire. All along, a certain measure of inbreeding has been a regular formula for success in Holstein breeding. Anyone looking more closely at Holstein bloodlines or respectively, the pedigree papers of individual horses down to the roots, is frequently taken aback about how frequently the same name literally jumps into ones face in the earlier generations. Today, where fresh blood in Holstein does not take effect at all, continued inbreeding to the proven “classic” Ladykiller xx is a piece of brinkmanship that demands a great amount of sure instinct by the breeders of Holstein.

Breeding history: Siethwende from 1971 to 1984, Zangersheide 1985, Elsmhorn 1986 to 1988, Sollwittfeld from 1989, died 2003.

At the beginning of the 1970ies when cross-breeding with thoroughbreds was at its height in Holstein breeding, the responsible breeding management decided to give a signal. At the same time in Oldenburg, the two chestnut Anglo-Norman stallions Furioso II and Futuro gained great influence through their breathtaking numbers of coverings. Both were stallions of great substance and volume even though they derived from Furioso xx, one of the best international sires of showjumpers of his time. Alwin Schockemöhle, also resident in Oldenburg wanted to be even more successful and acquired the Furioso xx son Urioso on a leasehold basis. He was however prepared to sublet the solid liver chestnut to the Holstein Association. Hence, an inspection committee travelled to France, to appraise Urioso and in the process discovered Cor de la Bryère. Urioso ended up going to Holstein, where he covered for two seasons and was then forgotten. It was different with the young untrained dark tan stallion however. He began a triumphal procession in Holstein like next to no other stallion before or after him. His progeny gained influence in all German breeds and naturally also on an international level. He established significant sibling dynasties with the brother stallions Caletto I, II and II, as well as Calypso I to V, who proved themselves both in breeding and in competition sport. On a supra-regional level, the approved stallions Corrado I / F. Sloothaak (German champion 1994) and Cordalmé Z / G. Böckmann (second in the German Classics 1994) have lately caused a sensation in the international jumping business. In 1998 Cor de la Bryère celebrated his thirtieth birthday. His sons, grandsons and great-grandsons came from all over Europe on this occasion, to Elmshorn in his honour. The Cor de la Bryère daughters too, including such super mares as Costa 5 / Dr. Michael Rüping or more importantly Cordeka, the full-sister of the stallions Caletto I-II, with Herbert Blöcker caused a furore in equestrian sport. In indigenous rural breeds the name at times has an influence on the popularity of a stallion. As not everyone was versed in the French language and did not want to become tongue twisted with the long name, Cor de la Bryère became simply 'Corde' in the vernacular. Everyone knew then and still knows today who is meant by it.
